Book Reports
Book Reports will be due each Theme test week in Reading. The Theme tests are every 6 weeks. We will go to the I.M.C as a class to check out a book for each project. Below are the guidelines for all of the required book reports.
Diorama (adventure book) Due Oct. 10
Use a shoe box or any box about that size. To keep intact, you may cover the opening with clear plastic wrap.
Use actual small object or make your own. You must have an appropriate background.
Attach a 3” X 5” index card to the top of your diorama containing the following information:
Your first and last name.
Title of the book (underlined).
Author
Write the answers to these questions:
Would you recommend the book to a friend? Why or Why not?
Was the book interesting or exciting? Why or Why not?
Written (Mystery) Due November 14
1. Use the form I will provide.
2. All words must be spelled correctly. All punctuation must be correct.
3. Papers must be neat. If they are messy or wrinkled, they will not be accepted.
4. Reports must be in a folder. I will furnish construction paper for the folder/cover. The cover must include an illustration, title, and author of the book.
Oral (Science Fiction book) Due December 12
Dress up as a news reporter. You may want to use props such as posters, microphone etc. Be creative . . .
you can even add commercials for fun, if you like. Include the title, author, setting, problem, beginning, middle and end of the story. Tell if you would recommend the book to a friend, and tell why or why not. You can present this report in class or tape it from home and bring in the DVD for the class to watch. I will show an example of this report in class. Get your family involved and have fun!
Book jacket (historical fiction) Due January 9
Use 12” X 18” construction paper provided in class.
Illustrate an important setting from the story on the cover. Include on the front, the author’s name and the title of the book. Underline the book title.
Write a letter to the author on a sheet of paper and staple it to the inside of the book jacket. Tell the author why you enjoyed the book.
The letter must be in proper friendly letter form. Tips for Writing a Friendly Letter. Write a rough draft and recopy. Correct spelling and punctuation is necessary.
Ideas to think about:
Have you read any other books by the author?
Did you enjoy the ending?
Would you have changed the story in anyway? If so, how?
In what ways could the book be improved?
What part of the book did you like best?
Did you learn anything from reading the book? If so, what?
Why did you choose this particular book?
Living Representation (Biography book) Due February 13
Wear clothing and use props that will identify with the main character.
You may bring the clothing and props to school and put them on before you give your oral report.
Oral report requirements:
Must be at least 3 minutes long.
State the title of the book, the author, and the main character or characters.
Tell the main idea of the book.
Give a brief summary of the book in first person (speak as if you are the main character).
Jot down your ideas on note cards or a sheet of paper.
PRACTICE your report at home before giving it in class.
GOOD EXPRESSION AND A LOUD VOICE ARE IMPORTANT!
Pathchwork Pin-up (your choice book) Due March 13
What You Need:
One 18 inch-by-26-inch sheet of poster board or tagboard
Six 8-inch-by-inch squares of white drawing paper
A black, felt-tipped marking pen
Crayons or felt-tipped marking pens in assorted colors
Glue
Make six quilt patches by “stitching” around each piece of drawing paper with the black marking pen as shown.
Print the title of the book and the name of its author in the first quilt patch.
Draw a picture of the main character on the second quilt patch
Write about of your favorite part of the story on the third quilt patch
Draw a picture of your favorite part of the story on the fourth quilt patch.
Draw a picture showing where the story took place on the fifth quilt patch.
Print your name and the date on the sixth quilt patch
Turn these paper patches into a “quilt” by gluing them to the board.
Use the black marking pen to add extra “stitches.”
Mask (animal book) Due April 10
1. Use a large paper bag (grocery bag), box, etc. to make an animal mask representing the main character in the story.
2. Use paint, cloth, markers, yarn, or colored paper to decorate the mask. Find odds and ends around the house to use for eyes, ears, hair, etc.. Cut holes for the eyes, nose, and mouth.
3. Wear the mask while giving your oral report.
4. Oral report requirements:
a. Must be at least 3 minutes long: no longer than 4 minutes.
b. State the title of the book, the author, and the main characters.
c. Tell the main idea of the book.
d. Give a brief summary of the book.
e. Jot down your ideas on note cards or a sheet of paper. Use this to help you remember what to say.
f. PRACTICE your report at home before giving it is class.
